Versions of The Frog Prince we used:

        • The Prince of the Pond by Donna Jo Napoli
        • Arthurís Really Helpful Bedtime Stories, ìThe Frog Princeî by Marc Brown
        • The Frog Prince retold by Edith H. Tarcov
        • The Frog Prince Continued by Jon Scieszka

After reading the books we wrote our version. I made a cloze story and the children volunteered words to fill-in-the-blanks. Here is our version of the Frog Prince.

Once upon a time there was princess named Krystal. She was playing with her favorite toy. It was a sparkly yo-yo. One day she was playing by the pond. The yo-yo fell into the pond. She cried and cried.

A bumpy, green frog asked, ìWhat is the matter Princess?î

ìIím crying because my sparkly yo-yo fell into the pond and I donít know how to swim!î she said. ìI think there are aligators in the pond, too!î

The frog said, ìI can swim. I know how to stay away from alligators. I will get the yo-yo for you. Will you be my best friend if I get it for you?î

        ìYes,î she said.

The frog got the sparkly yo-yo for Tabitha. She grabbed it and ran away, fast! She didnít really want a frog for a friend. ìWhoever heard of a frog for a friend,î she said.

That night she was watching T.V. She heard a sound at the window. It was the frog! He said, ìLet me in. You said you would be my friend.î

Her mother told her if she made a promise she should keep it. The princess let the frog in to watch T.V. with her. They watched cartoons. The frog wanted to eat flies and drink pond water but they ate popcorn and drank orange juice. ìPrincesses donít eat flies and drink pond water!î she said.

It was late so the frog slept on the pillow of the sofa. In the morning Tabitha the Princess woke up and found a handsome prince. His name was Fred from Florida. They got married and went to Disney World. They live in Cinderellaís Castle. Sometimes if you look very closely you can see them dancing in the window.

        The End

The lesson of our story is always keep your promises and donít play by a pond if you donít know how to swim.
